Chapped Lips?
Here’s the Missing Step.
If you struggle with dry, chapped lips, you’re not alone.
For years, I kept a lip balm in every purse, drawer, and cup holder. And yet, my lips were still dry. Especially in colder weather, after being outside, or sometimes for no obvious reason at all.
I would smooth on another layer thinking, “Okay… this should do it.”
But before long, I was reaching for it again.
At one point I honestly thought, “Do I need to set a timer for this?”
However, what I eventually learned completely changed my lip care routine.
You see, I wasn’t doing anything “wrong.” In fact, I was doing what most of us do — adding more balm when our lips feel dry. I just didn’t understand how lips actually work.
Once I did, everything started to make sense — and my lips finally cooperated.
Why Lips Get Dry So Easily
Here’s the part most of us were never taught — and honestly, I wish someone had explained this years ago:
- Lips don’t have oil glands.
- Lips don’t exfoliate themselves.
Which basically means… they’re out here trying their best with zero support system.
Unlike the rest of our skin, lips can’t produce their own natural oils to stay moisturized. As a result, they dry out much more easily. In addition, because they don’t shed dead skin efficiently, that dry layer can simply sit on the surface — even when we’re faithfully applying balm.
And this isn’t just beauty talk — it’s backed by medical science.
In fact, the Cleveland Clinic explains it this way:
“Chapped lips occur because the skin on your lips is thinner and more sensitive than the skin on the rest of your body. This is because your lips don’t contain any oil glands. As a result, they’re at risk of becoming dry and chapped.”
So if your lips still feel dry after applying balm (again)… you’re not imagining it.
In other words, the issue isn’t always more balm. More often, it’s better preparation.

Why Balm Alone Isn’t Enough
When dry skin builds up, moisture can’t fully absorb. As a result, we keep reapplying balm — hoping this time it will “stick.” However, without removing that dry layer first, we’re really just layering moisture on top of it.
I used to think my lips were just “high maintenance.” In reality, they weren’t difficult — they just needed a plan.
Healthy lips actually require two simple things:
- Gentle exfoliation to remove dry, flaky skin
- Nourishing moisture to soften and protect
In other words, prep first… then protect.
Once I understood that, everything shifted — and my lips finally responded the way I wanted them to.
Rather than bouncing from product to product, I decided to be more intentional. Instead of just adding more balm to already dry lips, I focused on preparation first.

That’s when I began using the Mary Kay® Satin Lips® Set —
and honestly, it simplified everything.
First, the Satin Lips® Shea Sugar Scrub gently exfoliates away dry, flaky skin so moisture can actually absorb. Not harsh. Not aggressive. Just enough to smooth things out.
Then, the Satin Lips® Shea Butter Balm seals in hydration and keeps lips feeling soft and comfortable throughout the day.
And here’s what I noticed over time:
- My lips stay soft year-round — even in winter.
- I truly can’t remember the last time they felt chapped.
- My lipstick goes on smoother and even lasts longer.
In other words, once I stopped layering balm on top of dry skin and started caring for my lips properly, everything shifted.
It wasn’t about more product. It was about the right order.
Simple. Consistent. Effective. And honestly? That’s usually the difference.
